How often does brick need repointing?
It varies with exposure, mortar type, and drainage, but mortar generally needs attention long before the brick does. The reliable answer is to have it looked at when you see crumbling or recessed joints.
Can cracked mortar joints be repaired without replacing brick?
Usually. If the brick itself is sound, repointing the joints is enough. If bricks have spalled or shifted, those get replaced as part of the repair.
