What is parging?
Parging is a thin coat of cement mortar applied over the exposed concrete or block of your foundation wall — the strip of grey you see between the ground and your siding. It does two jobs at once. Cementitious vs. acrylic parging
Cementitious parging is the traditional approach: a cement-based parging mix troweled onto the wall. It’s proven, cost-effective, and the right answer for most Edmonton foundations.
Acrylic-modified parging adds polymers to the mix, which improves flexibility and adhesion. It tends to resist hairline cracking better, and it’s worth considering on walls that have moved or where you want extra durability.

What’s the difference between parging and stucco?
Parging is a thin cement coat applied to a foundation wall to smooth and protect it. Stucco is a thicker, multi-layer exterior wall finish applied over a larger surface. They use related materials but do different jobs.
Can you parge over old parging?
Sometimes — if the existing coat is sound, well-bonded, and properly prepared. But if it’s hollow, flaking, or debonded, coating over it just traps the problem. We check before recommending it.
Can parging be repaired, or does it all need replacing?
Localized damage can often be cut out and re-coated. Widespread cracking or debonding usually means removing and redoing the full wall. We’ll tell you which you’re looking at.
When can parging be done in Edmonton?
Cement-based work needs consistently above-freezing temperatures to cure properly, so parging season here generally runs spring through fall. Book early — the season fills up.
How long does parging last?
